Ponies pin Scotties on senior night

No matter what the sport, senior night is always a special night and against Glasgow, on senior night, the Havre High wrestling team took care of business.

The Blue Ponies knocked off their Class B rival 48-21 in front of the fans at the Havre High gymnasium and honored three seniors, Ryan Stewart, Jazz Schroeder and Tyler Schaub, in the process. HHS was behind early, 15-6, but rallied to outscore the Scotties 42-6 the rest of the way.

“It was a fun dual,” HHS head coach Scott Filius said. “Glasgow and us don’t really match up too well in terms of weights, so we were both trying to move kids around a little bit to get them good matches. But the kids competed hard and I really appreciated Glasgow coming here.”

The Ponies started strong with a win by Mick Chagnon at 103 pounds. He pinned Dawson Boland in the second period to put Havre up 6-0. Glasgow then scored back-to-back wins as Dylan Young lost to Alex Ost 7-6. Then, Colten Fast beat Cameron Pleninger of Havre 12-8 at 120 pounds. Stewart, who wrestled up at 126 pounds, lost a hard-fought match to Kaden Zimmerman 8-3 and at that point, Glasgow led 9-6. Then a forfeit by Havre at 132, put the Scotties in front 15-6.

“The thing with Ryan is that he was already sick and then we had him move up,” Filius said. “It’s kind of one of those things, you are damned if you do and damned if you don’t. But he is going to take off this weekend.”

At 138 pounds, Lane Paulson started to turn things around and when he pinned John Gremer in 3:44, the score was trimmed to 15-12. Havre then got 18 points as Martin Wilkie (145), Connor Harris (152) and Taylor Gopher (160) all won by forfeit. Glasgow’s Tel Aune scored a pin over Schroeder, trimming the HHS advantage to 30-21, but it would be the last points scored by the visiting team.

Mason Dionne got a win over Dylan Nieksens, pinning him in 2:43 at 182 pounds. That victory clinched the win for HHS. Schaub (205) and Austin Ratliff pinned their opponents to put an exclamation point on the evening, as Havre closed the dual with three consecutive pins.

The Ponies will be back in action this Saturday, when they will compete at the Malta Invitational. The next weekend, Havre will defend its title at the Eastern A Divisional tournament, which is scheduled for Feb. 3 in Belgrade.
