Bears, Tornadoes stay alive in 9C boys tourney

Early morning games at the District 9C tournament are tough. But Turner and Big Sandy put on an entertaining show in the first 9C boys loser-out game of the tournament Thursday morning inside the HHS gymnasium.

Turner advanced with a 65-63 win over the Pioneers, but not before having to hold off the Pioneers in a thrilling finish. Turner led 18-6 after the first quarter, and held a halftime edge as well. But the Pioneers roared back with 39 points in the final 16 minutes, and had several chances to tie or take the lead down the stretch. But Turner (9-10) held strong at the end and moved into loser-out action this morning.

Eddie Harmon had a huge game for the Tornadoes with 26 points and two 3-pointers, while Cody Welsh added 18 points. Big Sandy, which saw its season come to an end with a 3-16 record, got 19 points from Kade Strutz, and 15 each from Ryan Roth and Clint Darlington.

In the second game of the morning, Box Elder also advanced. After a tough loss to Hays-Lodge Pole Wednesday night, the Bears bounced back with a 52-35 win over Chester-Joplin-Inverness.

The Bears led from start to finish, in moving on to today's loser-out game against Fort Benton. The Bears got 10 points and four rebounds from Malique Rosette, while Peyton Gardipee scored seven points and dished out seven assists. In what was CJI's final game of the season, the Hawks were led by Spencer Richter, who had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Tyler Wanken added 15 points for the Hawks.

Box Elder (8-12) will face Fort Benton today at 11, while Turner plays again at 12:30 p.m. The winners of those two games will meet in tonight's consolation game at 7, with a spot in next week's Northern C on the line.
