Another Leadership High School class graduates in Havre

After a morning spent job shadowing in the last month of preparing life skills, 19 Havre High School juniors graduated from Leadership High School Tuesday.

The program started in 2000 and is put on by the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Havre High School to give students enrolled some extra education in preparing for adult life, Chamber Executive Director Jody Olson said.

"(It gives them) a snapshot of life outside of school and maybe shows them some skills and job opportunities," she said.

The students started with job shadowing at locations like the local hospital, elementary schools, Head Start, a pharmacy, a veterinary hospital, Hill County Electric, a funeral home, the Havre Police Department and Havre Animal Shelter.

They then attended a luncheon and graduation ceremony at Montana State University-Northern that included a presentation by Northern about college and financial aid applications and presentaitons by three previous graduates of Havre's Leadership High School, KRTV newscaster Shannon Newth; Beau LaSalle, who was recently hired to take over next year as Havre High School's head wrestling coach, and state Rep. Jacob Bachmeier, D-Havre.

Olson said she added something new to this year's graduation, randomly selecting two graduates to receive $500 scholarships funded by the Chambers' revived local ice fishing derby to be used at any Montana college or university.

Hailey Azure and Aryana Vauthier received the scholarships.

Olson said the program starts in October with 20 juniors - one of the participants moved out of Havre mid-year this year, dropping the number to 19 - meeting at a two-day retreat for an introduction to the program and team- and leadership-building activities.

They then meet once a month at various locations such as city hall and law enforcement facilities; District 4 Human Resources Development Council; The Salvation Army, Feed My Sheep Soup Kitchen and Northren Montana Care Center; Bear Paw Development  Corp. and Pacific Steel and Recycling. The students tour and learn about the facilities and also receive presentations on various subjects from communications to financial planning from a variety of businesses, groups and organizations such as Havre Trails.

Olson added that the students' favorite month was likely December when the activities included them bringing money of their own to buy gifts for children listed on The Giving Tree.
