North Star Elementary School continued a decades-old Hi-Line tradition Thursday with its annual Grandparent's Day.

The event, hosted by Jan Donoven's first-grade class with the help of Dani Jo Kline, saw 45 grandparents spend the morning with their grandchildren as the students performed songs and skits, read to and painted with their grandparents.

"I've been teaching 33 years and have been hosting a grandparent's day for as long as I remember," Donoven said. "It is so rewarding to see the kids spending a day like this with their grandparents. It was a special memory for everyone."

Coffee and donuts were served to attendees as Mackenzie Jenkins took photos of the families, followed by the program and activities, ending with the singing of a song by the first graders.

Lori Tollefson and Chris Lockridge prepared a chicken dinner for the students and their grandparents.

Several grandparents were presented awards, including Dick and Diane Clark for traveling the farthest; Barb Fey for having the most grandchildren at the event; Karen Hadford, J.B. Moore and Kent Matkin sharing the dubious distinction of playing the naughtiest tricks in their day; Cheryl Lavery for being the youngest grandparent there; Teri Sell and Joe and Marsha Horel for being the first grandparents to return their interview sheets; the celebrity grandparents award went to Betty Hummel for being the state spelling bee champion and national spelling bee runner-up; and Chris and Chery Lavery, the school custodians, were named the hardest-working grandparents.

Student Ella Hawkins also received an award for having the most grandparents there.
