The 2017-18 Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team received two top awards this season, for sportsmanship and community service. The Northern wrestling team was also honored with a Champions of Character Award as well.

The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team was recently selected for an outstanding team honor. The Lights were the recipients of both the Buffalo Funds "Five-Star" Champions of Character Team Award and the Dr. James A. Naismith-Emil Liston Team Sportsmanship Award.

The Buffalo Funds Five-Star Champions of Character Team Awards are presented at the end of the season for each of the NAIA's 25 championship sports.

Teams that receive this prestigious award demonstrate in everyday decisions integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership. These institutions and athletic programs strive for excellence in and out of competition and are part of communities throughout the country dedicated to character-driven intercollegiate athletics.

The Dr. James A. Naismith-Emil Liston Team Sportsmanship Award is given to the team that best exhibits respect, civility, integrity, and fair play during its season of play.

Head Coach Shawn Huse's Lights have served the community of Havre and the surrounding areas with their volunteerism efforts by working with various programs and foundations. Their efforts with helping in over 15 various events, activities and challenges earned them the honor of being presented with the prestigious Champions of Character team award.

The Northern Lights finished their season with a 19-12 overall record and hosted a first-round playoff game in the Frontier Conference Championships. Three Lights received post-season honors on the year: Ryan Reeves, Charles Porter and Devin Bray. Senior forward Ryan Reeves was named the Frontier Conference Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, was selected to the First Team All-Conference and was honored as an Honorable Mention All-American while leading the entire NAIA in total blocks and blocks per game. Senior guard Charles Porter was named to the Frontier Conference Honorable Mention team while sophomore guard Devin Bray earned NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete honors for his performance in the classroom.

The Lights basketball team joins the Lights wrestling team in receiving the Team Sportsmanship Award this season as the grapplers were given this honor earlier in the month for the fifth consecutive year.
