MSU-N rodeo teams off to a strong start

After a long, harsh winter, the Montana State University-Northern rodeo team returned to action for the spring portion of the Big Sky Region rodeo season.

The Northern team was in Bozeman last weekend for the Montana State Spring Rodeo, which was held in front of a sold-out crowd for two nights inside the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.

In all, Northern had four champions at the rodeo with Zane Marcenko winning the steer wrestling title, John Bell capturing a crown in team roping, Tara Stimpson winning in barrel racing and Kassidy Taylor Williamson winning a buckle in goat tying.

The Lights finished day one in third place with 415 points.  Marcenko claimed the top spot in steer wrestling with a time/score of 13.5, came up second in tie-down roping with a time/score of 23.1, and placed second in the Men's All-Around.  Bell teamed up with Jace Bishop (header) from MSU to finish first in team roping with a time/score of 13.6.

The Skylights finished day one in the sixth spot with 10 points.  Stimpson finised eighth overall in barrel racing with a time/score of 15.50 and Tori Shyleene Blea came up sixth in goat tying with a time/score of 18.2.

On the second day of the rodeo, the Lights were in third place with 415 points. Marcenko placed in the top 10 in tie-down roping, while header Tyler Jay Doney placed third in team roping and heelers Yancy Taylor Hawley and Victor Glen Phillips were in the Top 10 in team roping as well. The Lights also took fourth on day two with 278 points.

The Skylights showed great improvement from day one, picking up second place and totaling 328 points — just 47.5 points behind champion UM-Western.  Leading the way for the Skylights was Stimpson who claimed the top spot in barrel racing (time/score of 14.98) and Williamson who placed first in goat tying (time/score of 7.9).  Rounding out the top 10 finishes for the women was Calonna Kaye Slade (barrel racing time/score 15.39), Jayne Lee Ann Keeley (goat tying time/score 8.9), and Blea (goat tying time/score 8.9).

The Northern rodeo teams are right back in action this weekend with the Miles Community College Rodeo in Miles City.
