Lights ink three standouts

The Montana State University-Northern basketball season has been over for some time now, but for head coach Shawn Huse, the process continues.

Huse announced Monday three additions to the process for the 2018-19 season, with the signings of junior college transfers Mascio McCadney, Joe Fons and Cedric Crutchfield.

McCadney is a 6-3 guard, originally from Detroit. He comes to Northern from Henry Ford Community College where he was named All Eastern Conference MCCAA as well as to the NJCAA District 10 All-Tournament Team. This past winter, McCadney scored 15 points and grabbed four rebounds per outing, while also shooting a stellar 47 percent from the 3-point line.

“Mascio is a great teammate and great person first and foremost," Huse said. “Yes, he puts up great numbers all across the board, but does so in an efficient way that is within the framework of his team’s offensive and defensive philosophies. We are ecstatic to have him on board as we feel he is a huge key to our success moving forward. We just moved into contention for great things, we feel (with his signing). Mascio has been raised and coached extremely well by his family and coach Shepard. He is a hard worker who takes care of his business both on and off the court, each and every day — we really look forward to what he is going to bring to help take us to another level.”

Fons is a 6-7 forward from Calistoga, California, and he comes to Northern from Napa Valley College. This past season he was named First Team All Bay-Valley-Conference, while averaging nine point, six rebounds and one block per contest. He also shot 55 percent from the field and a stellar 90 percent from the foul line.

“Joe Fons is another great guy and great teammate who has been brought up and coached well by his family and coach Ball," Huse said. "He played on a great team that plays a very four-year style of basketball, and put up solid numbers on their very balanced team. He is an excellent all-around forward that works extremely hard on the court. He can truly score from both inside and out, as well as pass the ball and defend multiple positions. He really adds depth that we need right now. We are ecstatic that Joe chose us, and feel like this will be a great fit for he and us.”

Crutchfield is a 6-8 center from Houston. He is coming to Northern from Dakota College at Bottineau, where he averaged 10 points and six rebounds, while shooting an outstanding 54 percent from the floor.

“Cedric is a true big man that knows how to play inside, and can defend on the perimeter when necessary," Huse said. "He is a high character, hard-working teammate that will enhance everything we like and do in our program, and here at Northern. We are very fond of Cedric … as he is another impressive, conscientious guy whom you can tell has been raised right and coached well, by his family and Coach Lemon. He can score and pass out of the post, communicates on defense, and his free throw shooting is very solid as well. He really fit in well on his recruiting visit and we are extremely excited about Cedric Crutchfield chose to be a Light.”
