Ponies make strides in Whitefish

As the Havre High track teams steamroll toward the Glasgow Top 10 meet Tuesday, the Blue Ponies tested their strength against the Western part of the state last Saturday at the Whitefish A.R.M. Invitational.

The annual meet, which featured teams from Class AA, Class A and Class B, was swept by Glacier, which won the boys meet with 261 points and the girls meet with 115. The Havre boys finished seventh with 16 points, while the Pony girls were sixth with a respectable 49 points. Whitefish took second in both the boys and girls meets behind Glacier.

The Havre boys may have only scored 16 points, but almost all of those points came thanks to the effort of senior Ivar Aageson. In addition to finishing second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.81, Aageson also took home third place in the long (20-02). The Ponies got most of their points from those two events, the other points came from the 400-meter relay, an event in which Aageson also competed along with Cole Watson, Brock Nystrom and Andrew Boucher. They posted a time of 47.37. Boucher also notched Havre’s other top-10 finish, as he finished eighth in the 400. Aageson also finished eighth in the high jump.

In the girls meet, Sarah Faber put together an impressive performance to lead the way for the Ponies. The junior finished third in the high jump (4-10) and also sixth in the long jump (14-07). Jessa Chvilicek also had an impressive day, finishing just behind Faber in the long jump and also helping both the 400 and 1,600-meter relay teams find the podium.

In the 400 relay, the Havre girls, which ran Chvilicek, Katie Wirtzberger, Loy Waid and Taylor Torgerson, took home the top prize after a time of 52.92. In the long relay, the same group of girls finished third with a time of 4:19.29. Loy Waid, a freshman, also had a breakout performance in the 400-meter dash, running a time of 1:03 to get third.

The other event that produced points Saturday for the Pony girls was the 100-meter hurdles. Havre had two individuals place in that event as Logan Huebsch finished third (17.46) and Ireland Coyne finished fourth (17.51). Chvilicek, Wirtzberger, Grace Loftus, Huebsch Jordan Keith and Gillian Dorrance also placed in the top 10 in another event, but fell just short of reaching the podium.

Both Havre teams will compete in the Glasgow Top 10 meet Tuesday in Glasgow.
