Chargers edge Northstars in Havre home opener

The Havre Northstars took on the Great Falls Chargers in their home opener at Legion Field Tuesday night. However, despite almost rallying from 10 runs down in the first inning, Havre dropped the game to the Chargers 15-11.

When the two teams started, the sun was shining bright over Legion, but after a game that last nearly four hours, the game finished under the lights. Gavin Mosbrucker, who started the game for the Northstars but, didn't make it out of the first inning, was hit with the loss.

The Chargers did much of their damage in the first inning against Mosbrucker by drawing walks. With runners on base, Great Falls managed to cash in and by the time the Northstars recorded the third out in the top of the first, they trailed by double digits.

Yet, in the bottom half of the inning, things started to turn around a little, as catcher Jake Sedahl belted a triple that scored a run and got the Northstars on the board. But in the top of the second, Great Falls pushed the lead back to 11 after plating two runs to go up 12-1.

Havre rallied with strong innings of its own in the second and third innings. The Northstars got the bases loaded in the bottom of the second before eventually getting three runs. They followed that up with four runs in the bottom of the third, cutting the Great Falls advantage 13-8 going into the fourth inning.

After that offensive explosion, things calmed down a bit. Austin Delarosa did a good job in relief of Mosbrucker, but hurt his leg when a comebacker struck him in the knee. Tony Antley relieved him and lasted until the eighth inning, when Brandan Garden took over. He managed to hold Great Falls scoreless in the last two innings, giving Havre a chance to steal a come-from-behind win.

After again getting the bases juiced in the bottom of the seventh, Sedahl ripped a single down the left field line, scoring two runs and getting Havre back within striking distance at 15-11. But the Northstars managed just one hit and zero runs in the final two innings, as Great Falls held on for the four-run victory.

Sedahl led the way for the Northstars with three hits and three RBIs. Antley and Mosbrucker each added two hits in the loss, while Ethan Roberts, Garden, Quinn Reno and Eli Cloninger each added one. Havre finished the game with 11 runs on 12 hits. The Northstars also made eight errors. Great Falls, on the other hand, managed 15 runs on eight hits. The Chargers also limited their errors to six.

Havre will play again Friday and Saturday in Billings in non-conference action. The North Stars also play Sunday in Great Falls.
