The Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team was back in action this weekend, playing three games in two days this past Saturday and Sunday.
The Northstars opened the weekend at home Saturday, against the Billings Expos, who defeated Havre at Legion Field Saturday afternoon 12-2. Yet, the Northstars rebounded Sunday, winning a pair of games in Great Falls. First, Havre beat the Great Falls Outlaws 12-0 and also knocked off a team from Helena by a final of 4-1, improving the Northstars overall record to 4-5.
In the first game of the weekend for Havre, Billings jumped out to an early 7-1 lead on the Northstars, thanks to three runs in the top of the first and four in the second. Havre scored one run each in the bottom of the second and fifth innings, but the Expos tacked on a run in the fifth and four more in the sixth, ending the game early because of the mercy rule.
Garden was given the loss for on the mound for Havre. Billings finished the game with 13 hits, while the Northstars managed just five.
After dropping the game to Billings at home Saturday, Havre traveled to Great Falls to take on the Outlaws and in the first game Sunday morning, the Northstars got a gem from Tony Antley as they cruised to a 12-0 win. Antley pitched all five innings in a game that was shortened due to the mercy rule. In five innings, he allowed just one-hit and threw a shutout, while managing four strikeouts. Kennedy McKay and Ethan Roberts each had two hits for the Northstars. Caleb Allestad also managed a hit, while Jake Sedahl and Garden each managed two RBIs. Antley also added an RBI in addition to getting the win.
Following the win over Great Falls, the Northstars went for two in a row against Helena and got off to a great start with two runs in the the first inning. Ahead 2-0, Havre added two more runs in the third to go up 4-0 and added another in the top of the seventh to make the final score 5-1.
Brenden Danielson was on the bump for the Northstars and on his way to earning the win, he earned a complete-game victory after one-hitting Helena. Danielson threw 14 first-pitch strikes and struck out six for the game. At the plate, Eli Cloninger led the way for the Northstars with a game-high three hits. Sedahl also had another strong outing with two hits and one RBI, which was matched by Allestad, who also racked up two hits and drove in a run.
The Northstars will be back in action this weekend with games at home Saturday against Kalispell and Billings, as well as a conference doubleheader on the road against the Tri-County Cardinals Saturday in Conrad. The action at Legion Field Saturday will get underway at 11 a.m., while Havre and Tri-County will get things started Sunday at 2 p.m.
