Local Golf Report: Chinook golfers shine at state

From Tee to Green

The local golf scene is just heating up, but for many high school golfers, last week was the end of a difficult spring season.

With so much snow to start their season, Class B-C golfers had to wait a long time to get on the golf course, and still, it didn’t stop many of them from finding success at state tournaments last week.

The success included the Chinook Sugarbeeters at the Class C state tournament in Fairmont Hot Springs. The Chinook girls barely missed a trophy for the second straight season, as they finished fourth at state, just two strokes behind third-place Lone Peak. Chinook scored a 646, led by the All-State performance of Carrie Hofer, who finished in sixth place with a 199. Ashley MacLeod also earned a Top 15 finish with a 211, while Hailey Bell shot 236 and Alyssa Gruszie finished with a 243,

The Chinook boys finished 13th overall at the state tournament with a team score of 626. Tamer Jamieson led the way for the Beeters with a 195, while Brandon Paulsen shot 210 and Jacob Huckabee finished at 221.

I want to say congrats to not only the Beeters, but also all of our local high school golfers for this season. I know first-hand how tough a season it was, and for those of you returning to high school golf next spring, I hope the start is a lot better than 2018 was.

Meanwhile, league golf is in full swing now, and the weather has finally started to cooperate.

Last Tuesday at Prairie Farms Golf Course, Cowan & Sons were high team with 24 points. The squad was made up of Tyler Gibson, Brett Huestis, Justin Kallenberger and Kevin Tweeten. Jeremy Jensen shot 1-under par for low gross, while Huestis was low net with a 27. On Wednesday night, Master Sports earned high team with 23.5 points. Dave and Doug Sheppard and Mark and Barry Kato were on the course for MS. Jensen and Jim Kato tied for low gross, each shooting rounds of 36, while Scott Adams and Garrett Hanson were tied for low gross with 31.5.

In women’s league last Thursday, high team went to Independence Bank with 27.5 points. Julie Mariani, Pam Veis, Delonna Malone and Terry Lilletvedt composed the squad. Sarah Spangler was low gross with a 38 and Kathy Peterson was low net with a 29.5.

Last Thursday night at Beaver Creek, Grams earned high team with 23.5 points. Chris Owens, Kellen Malone, Ryan Callahan and Ned Malone made up the winning team. Jeff Brandon was low gross with a 37, and a big shout out to my cousin Jeremy “Bug” Heninger for getting low net with a 29.
