Skylights land junior college shooting guard

The 2018 recruiting class for the Montana State University-Northern women’s basketball team continues to grow. On Monday, Northern head coach Chris Mouat announced the signing of Sam Caruth, a 5-9 guard from Lamar Community College.

"Sam is a very good three-point shooter,” Mouat said. “She has great range and a quick shot. At the high school and junior college level she is a proven threat from the three. On her visit, we were also able to see her do some good things at the rim and from mid-range. She can definitely help us with her ability to stretch defenses."

Last season, Caruth connected on 66 three-point field goals, shooting 34 percent, and she shot 77 percent rom the free-throw line. Caruth averaged 12.7 points and 2.2 rebounds per game for a Lamar team that advanced to the NJCAA Region IX quarterfinals. Caruth was named to the Region IX All-Tournament team.

Caruth prepped at Faith Lutheran High School in Las Vegas, Nevada her senior season after spending her first three seasons at Rosemont High School (MN). At Faith Lutheran, she was a First Team All-Conference, All-Region, and All-State selection. She helped the Crusaders to a Class 1A state championship. In the state title game, she scored 28 points including a state high school tournament record 6 three-point field goals. She led all of Nevada with 101 three-point field goals, which is the second-highest mark in Nevada history.

At Rosemont High School, she holds the single game record for three-pointers made in a game with 7.

Sam is the daughter of Tom and Cindy Caruth. She plans on majoring in criminal justice at MSU-Northern.

Caruth brings Northern’s recruiting class to six new players, including Box Elder’s Cecilia Vielle, Froid-Lake’s Morgan Mason, Columbia Falls’ Sydney Hovde, Petra Sellin from Sweden and junior college guard Sabin Keo.
