HPS Education Foundation presents 2018 scholarships

Havre Public Schools Education Foundation recently presented the 2018 scholarships offered by several donors.

The ceremony was held in conjunction with the HHS Academic Awards May 10. There were 22 scholarships awarded totaling about $25,000.00.

The $500 HPSEF Memorial Scholarship in memory of Cynthia Collier as well as a donation from the HHS Class of 1964 was presented to Baylee Miller. The $500 HHS Blewett Wrestling Scholarship was presented to Ryan Stewart by Coach Scott Filius. Two $500 Gene Gabriel Memorial Scholarships were awarded to Danielle Wallace and Laiken Harris by Jim Garbiel.

Scott Miller presented the $500 Howard Miller Memorial Scholarship to Ashlyn Rosgaard. The $750 Friends of Music Choir & Band Scholarship was presented by Jennifer Thompson to Jenna Meldrum.

The Elliott family provided funds for two $1,000 Dr. James & Kay Elliott Memorial Scholarships presented to Jazz Schroeder and Tori Mazurkiewicz. Paulette Cronk presented two scholarships offered by PEO AZ Chapter, $500. each, awarded to Kiara Christianson and Laiken Harris.

Alexandra Barkus was presented the $750 C. Lowell & Vivian D. Purdy Memorial Scholarship. The $750 Sue Swan Community Service Scholarship is funded by Sue's children in honor of their mother. Sue and daughter Ann Gillham presented the award to Alexandra Barkus.

Two $750 Sons of Norway Heritage Scholarships were awarded to Alissa Nanina and Kyley Verploegen. Kevin Lamey presented the $500 Wells Lamey Blue Pony Pride Scholarship to Danielle Wallace. The $500 Tom Lafond State Farm Up and Coming Entrepreneurial Scholarship was presented by Bobbie Jean Dolphay to Alexandra Barkus.

Bill Bradbury presented the $1,000 Alfred & Catherine Bradbury Memorial Scholarship to Jazz Schroeder. The Tillie Patterson Foundation Memorial Scholarship was presented to Kaelyn Kaftan and Danielle Wallace, each receiving a $6,000 award.

Three new scholarships were offered this year; Chapter V PEO, presented by Mary Pizzini, awarded Kaci Nicholson with the $1,000 award.

A $600 HHS Class of 1976 award was presented to Madison Shennum. The HHS Class of 1970 initiated a new feature on the Foundation website and offered a $1,000 scholarship as well, titled 'In Memory Of' the 35 classmates that are gone but not forgotten. The HHS Scholarship Selection Committee selected Jazz Schroeder as recipient and the class was pleased to learn after he was selected that he is a relative of a member of the class. Jazz was presented the award by class members Allen Ost and Wayne Hewitt.

Following the ceremony HPSEF hosted a luncheon to honor the recipients and donors.

Thank you Debbie Otto and HHS Food Service for the delicious meal; Jimmi Lynn Brown for use of the library. Heidi Kinsella included our information in the awards program and John Ita and the HHS Selection Committee, thank you for the hours spent selecting 9 of the recipients. Carol Gabrielson, 'Portrait of a Pony' photographer always captures images of the recipients and donors during the ceremony, thank you for the beautiful pictures.

The HPSEF Board of Directors are very proud that so many donors offer their awards through the Foundation scholarship program. The current members of the board are: Jack Maloughney as president, Rick Sedahl as vice-president, Mary Pizzini as secretary, Julie Monson as treasurer. Todd Hanson, Becky Toth, Kyle Leeds, Karla Bolken and Lorraine Verploegen are also part of the 9 member board.

Superintendent Andy Carlson is an ex-officio member and Cheryl Morse is Executive Director.
