Havre Jamboree interrupted by weather

The Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team hosted the Havre Jamboree this past weekend at Legion Field, but unfortunately, the weather put a damper on the festivities.

The Havre Jamboree opened Friday with the Northstars taking on Glasgow, and after seven innings of play, the game ended in a 3-3 tie. Due to the time limits of the jamboree, the game did not go into extra innings. Havre also had two games scheduled for Saturday night, with the first one against the Montana Regulators, followed by a second scheduled game against the Calgary Redbirds.

However, storm clouds had something to say about it and after just three and a half innings, thunderstorms and rain washed out the night. Havre won the game 4-3, but it did not go the full five innings to count as a regulation game. Following the lightning delay in the third inning, baseball was not resumed for the rest of the evening.

"Yeah, it was too bad," Northstars assistant coach Patch Wirtzberger said. "That's baseball, though, it happens sometimes."

While the Northstars didn't get as much baseball in as they were hoping to this weekend, they opened up against the Glasgow Reds. Glasgow grabbed an early 2-1 lead, scoring a couple of runs on Havre starting pitcher Tony Antley. However, in the bottom of the third inning, Brenden Danielson drew a walk and later advanced to third on a steal and a passed ball. Then, Jake Sedahl scored him with an RBI single, tying the game at 2-2.

The Reds took the lead back in the top of the fifth inning. Down 3-2, Ethan Roberts led off the bottom half of the inning with a double but was left stranded. The Northstars also failed to generate any offense in the sixth inning, but also kept Glasgow off the scoreboard, leaving the score 3-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning. Down to their final three outs, Kennedy McKay came through with an RBI to tie the game at 3-3, but after the final out, the game was called a tie.

Saturday, in the second game of the jamboree for the Northstars, they took on the Montana Regulators, who knocked off the Havre Comets in the Montana Baseball League 16U state championship game. The Regulators scored two runs early to grab a 2-0 advantage against Danielson, who got the start for Havre, but in the top of the second, the Northstars scored three runs of their own to take the lead. First, McKay singled to drive in Austin Delarosa, then a double by Brendan Garden scored McKay to even things up 2-2. Gavin Mosbrucker also got in on the act, bringing McKay home on an RBI single to wrap up the scoring that inning and give the Northstars a 3-2 edge.

The Regulators tied the game up at 3-3, but in the bottom of the third, Ethan Roberts doubled and eventually scored, in what ended up being the winning run. The game was delayed in the top of the fourth and never completed. The final game against Calgary was canceled.

The Northstars will be back in action in a Montana Baseball League game against Miles City tonight at Legion Field. The Northstars will also travel to the Williston tournament in Williston, North Dakota. The tournament will run Friday and Sunday.
