Six-Man football's Team USA still full of Montana's best

Six-Man football is a big deal around these parts. And it was earlier this week at the Montana State University-Northern practice fields.

The Team USA Six-Man squad stopped in Havre for two days of practice before heading off to Kerrobert, Saskatchewan, for the 2018 Can-Am All-Star Game. The game will be played Saturday at 5 p.m.

Of course, Montana has the second-most Six-Man football playing schools in the U.S., only behind Texas, so it's fitting that, a handful of players and coaches from Montana are making up the roster for this weekend's game.

The Montana players are: Javier Somerfeld, RB/LB, Power; Trever VandenBos, RB/LB, Valier; Colter Zentner, RB/LB, Bridger; Nick Althoff, RB/DB, Bridger; Shay Adler, RB/LB, Hysham; Brian Field, RB/DE, Westby-Grenora; Jeremiah Paine, QB/DB, Westby-Grenora; Koltin Christiaens, QB/DB, Valier; Russell Zentner, C/DB, Bridger; Will South, RB/LB, Bainville; Cole Berg, C/DE, Westby-Grenora; Treyton Pickering, E/DE, Sunburst.

The head coach is Brad Hoffman of Custer-Hysham and the assistants are Nate Oren of Fromberg and Thomas Field of Westby-Grenora.

Mark Largent and Danny Ramirez, both of Kaycee, Wyoming, are also on the U.S. squad. Tucker Scherbarth of Harvard, Nebraska, and Garret Egger of Valentine, Nebraska, round out the team.

"This will be the fourth one I've been involved in. They treat you very nice up there and take it serious," Hoffman said. "They hold tryouts up there (in Canada) to make the team. It's kind of a big deal up there for them."

Several area gridders have played in recent Can-Am games. Team USA leads the all-time series 17-4, and is riding an eight-game winning streak.
