Hazel was born on November 29, 1935, in Worland, Wyoming, to James and Ruth (Irvin) Fare. She was raised in Worland, graduating from Worland High School in 1953. Hazel continued her education at Montana State College in Billings, where she received her associate degree in nursing. While in college, she met Hugh Nugent, whom she married on November 27, 1957, in Worland. The couple made their home in Anaconda for several years, where they had three children. Hugh worked for the railroad, and his work took them on the road for the next several years, living in Livingston, Havre, North Dakota, and Minnesota. In 1981, the couple divorced, and Hazel returned to Havre, where she worked first for Northern Montana Hospital, and then for the various foot clinics. She retired in the late '90s, and she spent her time volunteering at the North Central Senior Center.

Hazel enjoyed knitting hats for babies, her volunteer work at the Senior Center, coloring, sewing, and collecting angels. Hazel had a passion for travel, visiting Alaska, Bolivia, Peru, Australia, New Zealand, China, Hawaii, and Thailand. She absolutely adored her children, and she was proud of all of their accomplishments.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Ellen Nugent; parents, James and Ruth Fare; brother and sister-in-law James and Carmen Fare; bonus son Ron Kristensen; cousin Phyllis Mayer; and former husband, Hugh Nugent.

Hazel is survived by her children Paul (Jody) Nugent of Havre and Laura Nugent of Billings; bonus daughters Colleen (Kenny) West and Ronda (Neil) Larson, all of Havre; long-term best friend Bill Kristensen; and through Bill, bonus grandchildren and great-grandchildren who enriched her life.
