An early birthday surprise

Havre Daily News Staff

Carolyn Shulund got a double surprise gift last week, even though she said it wasn't her birthday.

Her son Dale, his wife, Marlene, and their daughter Nicki and her boyfriend, Phil Yoeman, brought more than a pizza to her house - they also brought a collage that included a poem written by Dale and a custom-made fur coat crafted from beaver Dale trapped on a ranch in the Bear Paw Mountains.

"Near as I can figure it took about eight months to get it," Shulund told his mother, "from when I started trapping the beaver in the mountains."

"I don't deserve this," she said.

"Yes, you do," he replied.

Shulund said the company that made the coat, out of seven beaver he had trapped, recommended it be insured for $3,000.

"It's so pretty," Carolyn Shulund said.

Marlene Shulund told her mother-in-law it also came with a special hanger and protective cover.

Her son warned her to be careful about when she wore it, too.

"It's really warm," he said.
