Duke was born June 10, 1946, in Poplar, MT, to Korgal and Iola (Benson) Sutherland. He was raised in Poplar, attending school there until until high school. That was when the family moved to Rocky Boy, and he attended Box Elder High School. After his school years, he attended trade school in Chicago, IL, for certification as a mechanic.
