Vernon was born on May 1, 1945, in Lodge Pole, to James and Edna (Brown) The Boy. He was raised in Lodge Pole until 1948, when the family moved to Hays. They relocated once again in 1952, to Havre, where Vernon attended school. He graduated from Havre High School in 1963, and began working, first as a butcher, and then as a carpenter. However, from a young age, he showed an incredible talent for art. Until the end of his life, Vernon painted, drew, sculpted and carved just about anything, and he did it with unerring accuracy.

He met Faith Eagleman in 1965, and the couple married in 1970. Faith brought two daughters, Robin and Paulette, to the marriage, and they added six more to their family, whom they raised in Box Elder. Faith passed away in 1995.

Vernon was a phenomenal artist, an amazing mathematician, and a constant student of astronomy. He was a truly kind, gentle man, who was a friend to all, so much that he would paint the portrait of everyone who passed away and give the portrait to the family. He was an outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, and camping, and he had a great sense of humor.

Vernon was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Faith; children Charlie, Keno, Vic and Verna The Boy; parents, James and Edna The Boy; and siblings William The Boy, David Mann, Lorraine Mann, and Margie Mann.

He is survived by his children Robin (Neal) Rosette, Paulette Pipe, James "Midge," Elliott, Jess, Paul and Brandon The Boy, and Adrian (Marcy) Demontiney; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings Bobby The Boy, Maryanne Temple, and Loren The Boy; uncle Joe (Susie) Brown; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family and friends.
