Friday's Prep Football: Belgrade shuts out Ponies

The Havre High football team had plenty of opportunities to notch a season-changing win Friday night over the Belgrade Panthers. But in the end, the Blue Ponies made a few too many mistakes.

Three turnovers and some trouble punting into the wind ultimately cost the Ponies, who were downed 10-0 by Belgrade Friday night in Blue Pony Stadium. The fourth-ranked Panthers got a touchdown run from Dyson Cheney late in the second quarter and tacked on a field goal in the fourth quarter to wrap up the 10-point win.

Down 7-0 late in the third, Reese Bulkley connected with Ethan Roberts on a 40-yard completion on fourth-and-10, giving the Ponies the ball first-and-10 at the Belgrade 11. However, on the very next play, Bulkley fumbled and when the Panthers fell on the ball, it dashed Havre's last and best hope of trying the game.

"I am really proud of the way our kids played," HHS head coach Ryan Gatch said. "They played hard defensively and we had some good things dialed up on offense. We just couldn't get it in the end zone. We have to find a way to score points and eliminate some of the mistakes we made. I need to do a better job with that."

Havre (1-3) will host Glendive next week. For more coverage see Monday's Havre Daily News.
