Hi-Line Football Roundup: Hawks crush Huskies; Knights return to the field

The Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks are hoping to get back into the playoff mix in Class C 8-Man football and after notching a big win, on the road against Belt last Friday night, the Hawks might be in business.

CJI, which came into the game against Belt with a 1-1 record in the A sub-division of the Northern C, spotted the Huskies 14 points early and trailed 20-6 at the end of the first quarter. Yet, from there, the Hawks offense took over, scoring 16 points in the second quarter to take a 22-20 halftime lead and 30 in the third quarter to blow the game wide open. The CJI defense shutout Belt the rest of the way and the Hawks rolled to a 68-20 win.

CJI quarterback Spencer Richter had a productive outing, accounting for three total touchdowns, one passing and two rushing. Jackson Diemert was also stellar, with two rushing touchdowns and a touchdown reception. Lane Fischer also scored on 50 and 41-yard touchdown runs, while Kealy Haaland also added a 48-yard touchdown run for the Hawks in the second half. CJI (3-1) will travel to Hays-Lodge Pole Saturday.

Centerville 37, Chinook 28

Just like CJI, the Chinook Sugarbeeters took part in an important game within the Northern C, as the Beeters welcomed Centerville into Hoon Field last Friday night.

Chinook started fast, building a 12-0 lead on two touchdown passes from Trajan Hannum to Isaac Bell, unfortunately, Centerville, which is undefeated, took over from there, scoring 19 points in the second quarter and 16 in the third quarter to build a 35-21 lead. Sam Dumas kept Chinook in the game thanks to a 62-yard interception return for a score and later, with the Beeters down 35-21, Hannun hit Toby Niederegger for a 66-yard touchdown pass to make it a one-score game with 12 minutes remaining.

However, Hannum was tackled in the end zone for a safety in the fourth quarter, thwarting any hopes for a comeback as the Miners held on for the 37-28 win. Chinook (2-2) will try to keep its playoff hopes alive this Friday night, on the road against Rocky Boy.

One week after hosting the No. 1 Six-Man football team in the state and the defending state champions, the Big Sandy Pioneers had another big game last Friday night, this time against North Division rival Geraldine/Highwood.

Parker Proulx also had a good night for Big Sandy, completing 16-of-26 passes for 180 yards and two scores, both of which went to Ryan Roth, who caught three passes for 42 yards.

Box Elder 62, HLP 38

The local action continued Saturday as Box Elder and Hays-Lodge Pole took part in a Northern C conference game. The Thunderbirds hosted the Bears in Hays but after Box Elder flew out of the gates with 22 points in the first quarter and 14 more in the second, the game was pretty much out of reach.

HLP did manage to score 22 points in the third quarter, to pull within 14 at 36-22 heading into the fourth quarter. However, the Bears responded with 26 in the final period, giving them the 62-38 victory. Box Elder (1-2, 1-1) will host Great Falls Central Saturday afternoon at 1. The T-Birds will host CJI.

Sunburst 49, North Star 12

While Big Sandy and Geraldine/Highwood played a critical game within the Six-Man North Friday night, the North Star Knights hosted Sunburst Saturday in a game that was significant for other reasons.

And that reason was simply that the Knights fielded a team for the game. North Star forfeited a game against Big Sandy two weeks ago and it was unclear if the Knights would play against Sunburst. But Saturday afternoon in Rudyard, the Knights took the field and fell to a solid Sunburst team 49-12. Caden Retting ran for a 33-yard touchdown and also hit Brody Wendland for a 16-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

North Star (1-2, 1-2) will host Denton-Geyser-Stanford Saturday at 1 p.m.

Shelby 23, Fort Benton 14

A disappointing season went from bad to worse this past weekend for the Fort Benton Longhorns, who dropped their fourth consecutive game to open the season. The Longhorns hosted unbeaten Shelby Friday night but fell short in a competitive game by the score of 23-14. Fort Benton will try to get its first win of the season Friday night against Simms.

Cut Bank 38, Harlem 0

The Harlem Wildcats played host to Cut Bank last Friday in a battle of Northern B teams. Unfortunately, the Wildcats were unable to get their first win of the season. After falling to Glasgow the previous week, Harlem dropped Friday's contest against Cut Bank by a score of 38-0. Harlem will host Wolf Point this Friday night in search of its first win.
