Northern hosts MSU-N Rodeo this weekend

It was week two in the fall season for the Montana State University-Northern cross country and rodeo teams.

The Northern cross country teams were in Bozeman for the prestigious MSU Cross Country Classic Saturday, which featured a ton of NCAA Division I teams, including Montana, Montana State and Idaho State. And against top competition, the Lights and Skylights held their own.

The Northern men finished sixth overall, led by Isiah Runs Above, who placed 36th with a time of 28:17.30. Beau Hyatt finished 39th overall with a time of 28:28.6 in a field of nearly 60 runners. Liam Baez-Terry was 44th for the Lights, followed by Amos Taiswa in 46th, Field Soosloff in 47th, Luke Karnauskas in 48th, Kai Krumwiede in 51st and Eddie Harmon in 53rd.

The Skylights also finished in sixth place at the MSU meet. Rachel David paced Northern with a 32nd-place finish. David ran the race in 19:29.10. Carlee Brown was also strong for Northern, finishing 35th with a time of 20:29.35. Raini Johnson also placed 38th overall, followed by Kailtin Nystrom in 43rd and Grace Schwenk in 44th.

The Northern cross country teams head to Wyoming Saturday for their yearly Battle of Border Dual with Central Wyoming University.

Meanwhile, last weekend saw the Northern rodeo teams head to Glendive for the second Big Sky Region Rodeo of the fall. At the Dawson Community College Rodeo, the Northern men finished in sixth place overall. George Marcenko was strong for the Lights with a fifth place in the tie-down roping, while Jerome Could was sixth in team roping.

This weekend will be a big one for the Lights and Skylights as they host the 2018 MSU-Northern Rodeo. The two-day Big Sky Region Rodeo will take place Friday and Saturday inside the Bigger Better Barn. Performances each night are set to begin at 7 p.m.
