Eagles corral the Blue Ponies in Sidney

The Havre High football team has been dealing with injuries in recent weeks and in Sidney Saturday, a beat up Blue Pony team was routed by the Eagles 40-3.

Sidney scored 33 points in the first half, while the Ponies managed just five first downs for the entire game. Havre got on the board with a Max Olson field goal in the fourth quarter, but that was the Ponies’ only score as they fell to 1-5 on the season. Sidney improved to 4-2 and enhanced its playoff chances.

While the Eagles are surging toward the playoffs, it was the fifth consecutive loss since the season-opening win over Hardin for Havre, which turned the ball over three times and finished 0-for-10 on third downs.

“They are a really good football team,” HHS head coach Ryan Gatch said. “We went out and we competed hard. We didn’t quit and we kept playing hard into the second half. We had some uncharacteristic things happen, some turnovers on offense and they were able to come out and establish their running game.”

Sidney got things started early with a big play, as Jace Winter caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Entz. Riley Waters added a one-yard touchdown run and after the first quarter, Sidney led 14-0.

In the second quarter, Waters scored another touchdown, this one on defense as he intercepted Havre quarterback Reese Bulkley and returned it 23 yards for a score. Sidney closed out the half with a touchdown pass and a touchdown run from Cooper McGlothlin. Another touchdown run in the third quarter by McGlothlin made it 40-0.

Without Ethan Roberts, a key starter on both sides of the ball, Havre was outplayed in just about every facet of the game. Sidney finished with 352 yards of total offense, including 197 yards on the ground. Havre finished with just 135 yards of offense, with 81 on the ground and 54 through the air.

McGlothlin completed 5-of-11 passes for the Eagles for 95 yards and a touchdown. He also ran the ball 12 times for 74 yards and two scores. Bulkley was just 1-of-4 in the game for three yards. He also threw two interceptions. Mason Dionne carried the ball 27 times for 82 yards for Havre and also attempted six passes, completing three for 51 yards, including a 32-yarder to Bulkley in the fourth quarter.

“Mason, he did a really good job for us,” Gatch said. “We kept fighting up front and he did a good job of getting some tough yards for us and ended up completing our longest pass of the day to Reese (Bulkley). But we just haven’t played that well on the road and that’s something we need to do better. I need to make sure we are better prepared for that.”

Brock Nystrom also had one catch for 21 yards. Caleb Allestad led the way for the Ponies on defense with eight tackles and one tackle for loss. Dionne also added six tackles and a tackle for loss, while Kellen Detrick had four stops and one tackle for loss.

Havre will host Billings Central at Blue Pony Stadium Friday night at 7 p.m.
