Blue Ponies trample the Cowgirls in the Corral

The Havre High volleyball team has aspirations of being good and part of that means beating up on teams you are supposed to and Saturday inside the HHS gymnasium, the Blue Ponies did just that.

The Ponies welcomed Conrad to Havre, a team HHS swept earlier in the season. Yet, in that first matchup, the Ponies had to battle back to win each set. This time around, there was no such issue as Havre cruised to an easy win by the scores of 25-10, 25-11 and 25-13. The win improved Havre’s record 8-6 on the season. The Ponies have also won five of their last six matches.

“The first time we played them, the sets were pretty close,” HHS head coach Tamecia Jarvis said. “So I was glad that we came out and played our game. We didn’t play to their level and we played really well.”

One reason why the Ponies were so dominant against Conrad, was the stellar play of junior Cassidy Acor. Coming into the match, she was already one of the top hitters in the Central A in terms of kills and hitting percentage, but against the Cowgirls, she did it all, notching 13 kills, eight blocks and eight aces. She also had just one hitting error.

“She played great,” Jarvis said of Acor.

After the Ponies won the first set in dominating fashion 25-10, the second set started off more competitively, before Acor nailed four straight aces to give Havre command. HHS went on to win 25-11, taking a 2-0 edge in the set.

“Everything just came together finally,” Acor said. “I had a better toss today than usual and that helped a lot. It was a fun match. Our team came together and we played great together and it’s fun when we have matches like that.”

In the third set, Acor continued her dominance, and this time, she utilized kills and blocks to allow Havre to build another big lead. A block by Acor made the score 24-13 and then, an ace by Sam Oliver ended the match and clinched a 3-0 sweep.

“Most of us have been playing together since seventh grade,” Acor said. “So we just know each other and our strong spots, and things have just really been coming together lately.”

When looking at the box score, Havre dominated in just about every category. The Ponies finished with 26 kills compared to nine for Conrad; 20 assists compared to nine; nine blocks compared to zero; and 15 aces to three. Conrad did manage 28 digs, while Havre finished with 26.

Acor led the way for Havre in three separate categories: kills, blocks and aces. Yet, she was far from the only player who stood out for HHS. Sam Oliver also pitched in with 11 assists and four aces. Kadyn Acor contributed with four kills, followed by Devyn Huebsch who had three. Kinsey Adkins and Caitlyn Terry both added a team-high five digs.

“Our serves were a lot better and we didn’t get aced 16 times,” Jarvis said. “Our passing has been a lot better, our serve-receive has also gotten a lot better as well.”

The Ponies will be on the road for two matches this week, as they will head to Browning Thursday and Cut Bank Saturday.
