Press release

The Havre High School speech and debate team competed at a small but highly competitive Class AA tournament in Great Falls Saturday, with students excelling at the early season meet.

“I am very pleased with how the Blue Ponies did this weekend, and as the season goes along I expect our team to continue to grow and improve,” head coach Tim Leeds said.

Havre was the only Class A school at the tournament, with the Ponies competing against students from both Great Falls High School and C.M. Russell High School from Great Falls, Helena High School and Helena Capital and Butte High School.

First-year competitor Elaine Atkinson, competing at her second tournament this year, pulled one first-place and two second-place rankings in the three preliminary rounds and ended up in second place after the finals round.

First-time competitor Melanie Veith also scored well in informative speaking, taking fourth place after the finals round in Great Falls.

Havre’s public forum debate team of Simon Hart and Xavier Ulano, with Hart competing at his first tournament along with second-year competitor Ulano, went 2-1 in the guaranteed preliminaries to break into semifinals. The team lost that round and ended in fourth place.

Second-year public forum team Joram Randolph and Noah Teasley went 1-2 and ended up in sixth place.

First-year policy debate team LillieAnn Mecklenburg, a second-year competitor for the Blue Ponies, and her partner, Dartanion Kaftan, who was competing at his first tournament, went 1-2 and ended up in fifth place.

Havre travels west this weekend, heading to Conrad Saturday for its invitational tournament.
