Soon after graduation, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army, and served until his honorable discharge. Following his discharge, he returned home to attend Northern Montana College. A year later, he moved to Minnesota to work, and about a year later, he began working for PAC in Kalispell. He returned to Havre soon after, and began working as a parts manager, most recently at North Star Dodge. He met Jean Beaver in 1974, and the couple married in 1976. In 1995, Richard retired from North Star Dodge to manage their rental properties.

He enjoyed watching football games and camping. He was an avid hunter, even hunting rattlesnakes. He and Jean loved to go dancing at the Eagles on Fridays, where he was a member. Richard also enjoyed making bird houses to place in Beaver Creek Park, and maintaining them every year.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Charlotte Perry.

Richard is survived by his wife, Jean of Havre; daughters, Sylvia (Terry) Hansen of Havre, and Belinda (Dennis) Sheridan of Billings; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three nieces, Barbara, Laura, and Elizabeth, all of Connecticut.
