Local News - Havre speech and debate sees success in Chester

Press release

While none of Havre’s students took a first-place finish in Chester at the Chester-Joplin-Inverness/North Star invitational speech tournament, they saw enough success to give the Havre speech and debate team 44 points in its first-place Class A finish.

“I am pretty happy with how we did,” Havre head coach Tim Leeds said. “This was a small tournament but it had tough competition. I am looking forward to coming back after the Thanksgiving break and continuing to improve and place kids at the tournaments.”

Havre took a slew of second-place finishes, with first year speakers Melanie Veith and Elaine Atkinson just missing the first-place mark. Veith competed in informative speaking and Atkinson in humorous oral interpretation of literature.

Fourth-year Lincoln-Douglas debater Kaleb Gardner also took second, going 2-1 with his only loss to a Great Falls Central debater who went undefeated in Chester.

First-year debater Jerzy Borowiecki took fourth in Lincoln-Douglas debate at the tournament.

Second-year debater LillieAnn Mecklenburg and her partner, first-year competitor Dartanion Kaftan, took second in team policy debate.

The Blue Ponies take the weekend off for the Thanksgiving holiday, then travel to Lewistown for the Fergus County High School invitational tournament Dec. 1.
