Lights bring mat hardware home from Great Falls

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team got back to work this weekend, and the Lights didn’t have to travel far, heading to Great Falls to take part in the Argo Duals and the Heritage Inn Open.

After going 1-1 in the Argo Duals Friday, the Lights got back to tournament action Saturday where they crowned two champions and placed eight wrestlers in the Heritage Open. The tournament featured a host of NAIA schools, including rivals Providence and Dickinson State, as well as top NCAA DII teams and more.

The Lights were led by the Bartel brothers, who won individual titles at the same tournament for the second time this season. Andrew Bartel placed first at 165 pounds and Isaac Bartel won the 197-pound title. Chris Nile also made it to the 174-pound championship match for the Lights before he ended his day with an injury default.

Up and down the Northern lineup, the Lights were strong Saturday. Nick Kunz and Rob Pair reached the consolation final at 125 pounds, but didn’t square off. At 149 pounds, Tony Evans battled his way to a fifth-place finish, while Steeler French made a strong run at 184, finishing third. In the consolation bout, French bested Providence rival Tyler Webley for the second time this season. Freshman Jase Stokes was also outstanding, finishing fourth at heavyweight for the Lights.

The weekend in Great Falls started with the Argo Duals Friday at the McLaughlin Center. The Lights were scheduled to wrestle three times, but Cascade Conference member Simpson was unable to make the trip from California. So, Northern took on NCAA Division II McKendree College and NAIA Northwest Kansas Tech, and the Lights came away with a split.

Northern blew out Kansas Tech 47-4 on the strength of five pins, a technical fall and a major decision. Wins came from Rob Pair at 125 pounds, Kieton Keller at 133, Landon Bailey at 141, Dylan Veis at 149, Brandon Weber at 157, Andrew Bartel at 165, Chase Short at 174, Isaac Bartel at 197 and Stokes at heavyweight.

The Lights finished Friday with the McKendree dual. McKendree, ranked fourth in NCAA DII edged the Lights 25-15. Stokes got his second pin of the day, while Isaac Bartel got a decision at 197. Brandon Weber also won at 157 and Bailey was victorious at 133.

Northern is off again until a Dec. 18 dual at Southern Oregon.
