Box Elder great Scott Henderson inducted into Montana Indian Athletic Hall of Fame

In 1990, the Box Elder Bears captured a histroic Class C boys state championship in basketball.

Last weekend, one of the Bears from that team had a historic night.

Box Elder great Scott Henderson was inducted into the Montana Indian Athletic Hall of Fame last Saturday night in Missoula.

Henderson was a star for the Bears during his career at Box Elder, including leading Class C in points per game, not once, but twice. Of course, it all culminated with that amazing run to the Class C title in the spring of 1990, when the Bears bested the Lambert Lions 80-73 in the state championship game.

Henderson was part of an illustrious class of inductees Saturday. A class that includes former Montana Lady Griz great Simarron (Schildt) Robertson, who led Browning to a state championship in girls hoops.

Also joining the Class of 2018 was Spike Bighorn of Brockton, Barney Smart Enemy of Hardin, Anthony Foote of Colstrip, Sarge Old Horn of Hardin, John Weeks of Wolf Point, Pete Conway III of Billings, Beau McFadyean of Billings, Darcy Merchant of Billings, Ryan Wetzel of Billings for basketball.

In addition, the 1980 Browning championship team will be honored, a group that includes Simarron's uncles, Ed Schildt and Russ Rink, along with Cliff Bull Calf, Bernard St. Goddard, Roland Kennerly, Beaver Spearson, Gordon Lee, Leland LaPier, Lyle St. Goddard, Wayne Racine, Floyd Cross Guns, George Woodward, Wilford Fish, and managers Arnold Long Time Sleeping and Kenneth Old Person.

Football players entering the Hall include Fred (Butch) Cobell of Western Montana College and Tuff Harris of Colstrip, plus coach Frank Shively. Others honored include boxer Gerald Gray Sr., wrestler John Neiss of Ronan, Blackfeet Grass Dancer Joe Sam Scabby Robe of Browning, cross country runner Ruby Yellowtail Ward of Lodge Grass, and the 1960 Hardin state champion track team that included Wayne Moccasin, Dan Three Irons, Gary Pretty Paint, Norbert Hill and Garland Plenty Hoops.
