Hi-Line Girls: Bears, T-Birds off to fast starts in the 9C

The first week of girls basketball on the Hi-Line was exciting. But in week two, things got intense as district play got underway.

The action in the District 9C last week started with a bang in Turner as the host Tornadoes mounted a huge comeback to beat the North Star Knights 53-51. Turner used a 19-9 run in the final eight minutes to upend the Knights in a thrilling game.

Syan Krass scored 21 points and Sarah Billmayer added 16 for the Tornadoes, while Kenidee Wolery scored 13 and Pain Peterson added 12 for the Knights.

Friday night also saw the rising Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds open the 9C season with a 43-34 win over Chinook. The T-Birds finished the game on a 9-4 run to pull away. Tahtianna Morgan scored 15 points and Mulleah Stiffarm added 10 for HLP, while Kourtney Hanson and Ashley MacLeod each scored 11 for the Sugarbeeters.

Box Elder began its 9C title defense Friday night with a 69-12 thrashing of Chester-Joplin-Inverness. The Bears scored 28 points in the first quarter, and got 18 points from Lilly Gopher. Payton Hawks scored five points for CJI.

Fort Benton also roared to a 9C win Friday night, defeating Big Sandy 71-19.

In the Class B ranks Friday, Rocky Boy opened District 1B play with a 56-42 setback at Shelby. Jaynah Gopher scored 13 points and Rochelle Pease added 10 for the Morning Stars.

Meanwhile, in the 2B, Harlem opened district play with back-to-back rivalry games. Friday night, the Wildcats edged Malta 51-48. Harlem took a big lead early, then had to hold on down the stretch. L'Tia Lawrence poured in 22 points for Harlem in the win.

Then, Saturday night, the Wildcats took on Wolf Point in a huge Class B showdown, but the Wolves pulled off there exciting win, 55-52. Harlem again led going into the fourth quarter, but Wolf Point went on a 17-12 run to finish the game. Lawrence and Skylee Dirden scored 16 points apiece for Harlem.

Back in the 9C Saturday, Box Elder blasted North Star 75-39. The Bears got 22 points from Lilly Gopher and 18 from Joelnell Momberg in the victory, while Paij Peterson scored 17 for the Knights.

HLP continued its winning ways Saturday, with a 67-37 win over CJI. The game was tight for a half, but the T-Birds closed on a 19-7 run to improve to 2-0 in the 9C. Four T-Birds scored in double figures, while the Hawks got 16 points from Payton Hawks and 11 by Abby Fraser.

In Fort Benton Saturday, the Longhorns got a key win over Turner in what was already an important 9C game. Fort Benton won 59-47. Chinook also took down Big Sandy 45-33, Saturday, while Rocky Boy fell to Fairfield 59-51. Rochelle Pease had a big game for the Morning Stars, scoring 23 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
