Hi-Line Girls: Bears, Tornadoes win big in the 9C

Hi-Line Girls Roundup

Christmas break is always a time for high school basketball to take a short break on the Hi-Line, too. But before the 2018 Christmas break got here, there were plenty of games on the calendar.

The Hi-Line girls action starts last Thursday with North Star and Turner both winning District 9C games. The Knights went on the road and handed Hays-Lodge Pole its first league loss of the season, 59-31. North Star broke the game open with a 17-2 run in the third quarter.

Shayla Borlaug led three Knights in double figures with 18 points. Paij Peterson added 13 and Jade Wendland scored 10. Mulleah Stiffarm paced the Thunderbirds with nine points.

In Chester Thursday night, Turner blew out Chester-Joplin-Inverness 63-34 behind 17 points from Shyan Krass. Rylan Conlan also scored seven points for the Tornadoes, while Peyton Hawks scored 15 and Abby Fraser chipped in with 10 for CJI.

In a non-conference game Thursday night, Box Elder had no trouble staying undefeated as the Bears crushed Geraldine-Highwood 91-29. Box Elder outscored the Rivals 36-2 in the first 10 minutes, and got 20 points by Joelnell Momberg, 15 from Angela Gopher, 11 by Lilly Gopher and 10 from Sarah Parisian.

In a District 1B game Thursday night, Rocky Boy fell to Conrad 50-44. The Morning Stars hung tough against the Cowgirls, but couldn’t get over the hump. Sasha Coffee paced Rocky Boy with 15 points.

Rocky Boy was hoping to bounce back Friday night, but the task was too tough against the rival Harlem Wildcats. Harlem outscored Rocky Boy 39-13 in the first half on its way to an easy, 69-20 win.

L’Tia Lawrence poured in 26 points for the Wildcats, while Skylee Dirden added 18 and Taya Trottier scored 12. Rochelle Pease led the Morning Stars with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Back in the 9C Friday night, Fort Benton stayed perfect with a dominant 69-41 win over North Star. The Knights hung in for a while, but the Longhorns went on a tear in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Aspen Geise topped all scorers with 20 points for Fort Benton, while Jade Wendland scored 17 and Paij Peterson added 12 for the Knights.

Chinook scored its first win in 9C play Friday night when the Sugarbeeters edged CJI 27-24 in a defensive struggle. The Beeters trailed 13-9 at halftime, but an 8-4 fourth-quarter run helped Chinook pull in front for good.

Megan Molyneaux scored 13 points and Kourtney Hanson added 11 for the Beeters, while Peyton Hawks scored seven for the Hawks.

Friday night also saw the first of back-to-back losses for Big Sandy. Friday, the Pioneers stepped out of conference play, falling to DGS 44-25. Big Sandy led after the first quarter, but the Bearkats outscored the Pioneers 25-11 in the second half. Jaylyn Cline scored 10 points in the loss for Big Sandy, which also fell at home to HLP 56-49 Friday night, as the T-Birds improved to 3-1 in the 9C.

Saturday night was yet another good night for Box Elder, which blasted Chinook 76-33. The Bears scored 50 points in the first 20 minutes, leading 50-15 at halftime, and Chinook never recovered.

Lilly Gopher led four Bears in double figures with 18 points. Maddie Wolf Chief scored 17, Sarah Parisian added 12 and Joelnell Momberg chipped in with 11. Kourtney Hanson scored 11 points for the Beeters.

Now, all Hi-Line teams will be off until Jan. 3-5 when the season resumes for good.
