Lewistown turns away HHS boys

All season long, the Havre High boys basketball team has shown signs of improvement and against Lewistown, the Blue Ponies put together a much stronger effort than in the first meeting in Lewistown.

However, there was one thing the Ponies still couldn't do Saturday night against the Eagles at the Havre High gymnasium and that was slow down Jaden Graham, who finished with 35 points, including 23 in the first half of a 61-50 win.

"You have to give credit to Lewistown," HHS head coach Walynn Burgess said. "They came out here and they executed and (Jaden) Graham just played an incredible game, I mean, 23 points in the first half. I am proud of the way we battled, we never gave up and we have shown some improvement, so that's something positive we can take away."

In the first quarter, both teams started sluggishly and at the 4:07 mark of the first quarter, the score was still tied 2-2. But that's when Graham started to get things going and after getting inside for a couple of buckets, Graham knocked down a trey to give Lewistown a 9-2 lead. Yet, before the opening stanza ended, Jake Huston hit from deep and after eight minutes, Havre trailed 13-8.

In the second quarter, Graham dominated. He made six field goals in the quarter, including a second make from 3-point range that put Lewistown in front 29-16. By the time halftime rolled around, the Ponies found themselves down 32-21.

In the first meeting between the two teams, Havre found itself within striking distance at the half, only to be blown out and while that didn't happen this time around, Lewistown did try to run away from the Ponies by scoring the first seven points of the third. However, triples by Austin Delarosa and Huston kept Havre within 14 and after three quarters, HHS trailed 52-36.

Huston hit another 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter to keep the Ponies within 15 points, yet Lewistown never allowed the lead to get to single digits and in the end, the Eagles held on for the 11-point victory.

While Graham torched the Ponies for a game-high 35 points, he wasn't the only Lewistown star to reach double figures as Tanner Trafton also added 18. For Havre, Huston was the leading scorer with 15 points. Clint Owens also reached double figures with 11; Kellen Detrick pitched in with eight and Delarosa ended with seven.

Havre (7-9, 2-4) will finish at 2-4 in the Central A and will enter the Eastern A Divisional tournament as the third seed from the Central A. Conference play may be over for Havre in the regular season, but there are two games left on the schedule before divisionals and the first will come Thursday at home against Browning. HHS will also play at Fairfield Saturday in the season finale.

"I thought that we did some good things," Burgess said. "We battled and we are getting better.'"
