Ponies bring hardware, history home

The second weekend of February has always been a fruitful one for Havre High winter sports teams. And the second weekend of February 2019 was no different.

Saturday in Bozeman, the Havre High boys swim team captured its first Class A-B state championship since 2010. The Blue Ponies scored 63 points to tie Billings Central for the Class A-C team championship. Havre, of head coach Bill Kilgore, also had plenty of outstanding individual performances on both the boys and girls sides, with the Havre boys also capturing the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay state titles.

"I am so proud of these young men for their steadfast devotion to the team and their unwillingness to throw in the towel when all but the slightest glimmer of hope remained," Kilgore said. "They rallied around each other, supported each other through adversity, and earned the title of state champion."

In Billings, the Havre High wrestlers had plenty to celebrate, too, especially HHS senior Martin Wilkie. Saturday night in the Metra, Wilkie became Montana's 34th four-time state champion, capping a perfect 46-0 season in the process. Wilkie also became Havre's third four-time state champ.

Sophomore Mick Chagnon also won an individual title for the Blue Ponies, with his victory in the finals of the 103-pound weight class Saturday night. Overall, Havre sent eight grapplers to the podium, and wound up scoring 170 points, which was good for second place in the team race for the second straight year. Havre has now brought home a trophy from the state tournament for 22 straight seasons.
