Northern's Brandon Weber a finalist for Little Sullivan Award

Montana State University-Northern senior Brandon Weber has already accomplished a lot in his college wrestling career, and with the NAIA postseason now here, he's not done yet.

But off the mat Weber has done a lot, too, in the classroom, in the community and even on the ranch.

So, it's no surprise that Weber was recently announced as a finalist for the prestigious Montana AAU Little Sullivan Award.

The Montana Little Sullivan Award was fashioned after the national AAU Little Sullivan Award. In Montana, the award is given to both a female and male athlete. Qualities of individuals nominated should include athletic excellence, leadership, character, sportsmanship and ideals of amateurism. In addition to those qualities from the national award, those nominated for the Little Sullivan Award must be from Montana.

Montana's Little Sullivan Award was created by David and Ella Rivines from Miles City.  Ella Rivines thinks that the first award was given out in about 1955. David Rivines was a great supporter of the AAU, both in Montana and nationally.

Weber is already a two-time NAIA All-American and an Academic All-American for the Lights, of head coach Tyson Thivierge. He also won the 2017 NAIA national championship at 157 pounds. He is currently ranked No. 2 in the NAIA at 157. Hailing from Forsyth, Weber also had a highly decorated high school wrestling career and, as a youth, wrestled in many AAU amateur tournaments.

Weber is one of four finalists for the male award. The others are Montana State University senior defensive lineman Tucker Yates (football), from Colstrip, Oregon State junior guard Tres Tinkle (basketball) from Missoula, and North Dakota State baseball player Jayse McLean, from Great Falls.

The female finalists for the award include, Montana State-Billings guard Aisha Breen (basketball), from Choteau, Rocky Mountain College volleyball player Hailey Copinga, from Billings, University of Colorado track and field standout Makena Morley, from Bigfork and Iowa State softball player Sydney Stites, from Bozeman.

This year's Little Sullivan Banquet is in Billings May 4.
