After graduation, Clyde enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for two years overseas in Vietnam. Upon his return home he was awarded the Silver Star on September 4, 1968, along with various other medals including a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. Clyde was the second-highest decorated soldier from Montana to serve in Vietnam.

Clyde hired on with the Great Northern Railroad in 1969 as a laborer and then in 1971 started work as a carman for BNSF, working up to foreman, where he worked until his retirement in 2003.

Clyde and Janice were married for 41 years until Janice's passing on September 18, 2012. Clyde married Marilyn Marquart on June 6, 2018, and the couple resided in Havre until his passing.

Clyde enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, and later at the cabin with Marilyn in Beaver Creek. He was athletic and played softball and bowled, along with water skiing, in his younger years. Clyde took great pride in his yard and could often be found outside working in his garden. He was a hard worker and showed his children that having drive and a strong work ethic would take you far. Clyde loved his family and cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren. He had a great sense of humor and had many inside jokes spanning over decades with friends.
