Scouts holding adult pinewood derby race

The spirit of the Pinewood Derby is enough to get even the biggest kids excited, which is why the Hi-Line District Scouts are hosting their first Down and Derby Adult pinewood car races.

The race is scheduled to take place at the Old Station Brewing Co.

Down and Derby is open to people 18 years of age or older. Pre-registration starts Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m at the Holiday Village Mall and ends March 27 at 8 pm.

People also can register by calling event coordinator Jenn Thompson at 945-2623 or Heather Hummert at 680-2228.

“The entire Hi-Line District of Boy Scouts of America from Chester to Malta” benefits from the funds raised during this event Thompson said. The funds raised from the derby “help defray costs to send adult volunteer leaders to council and national trainings which help adult leaders provide quality programs to the youth they serve.”

The registration is $25 per car and includes a car-building kit that includes a block of wood, four plastic wheels and four nails for axles. Race rules, car specifics will be given upon registration. Adult pinewood derby races have become a popular fundraising event for Scouts across the country.

The finished car must use all pieces and not exceed 8 ounces, must not exceed 2 ¾ inches in width and not exceed 7 inches in length. The pinewood cars must clear the center rail which is 1 inches by ¼ inches tall, along the entire length of the car.

Participants will race their cars multiple times in different lanes. Each race will also be timed.

The premiere Hi-Line fundraiser awards trophies to the top six finishers as well as the people’s choice. Along with the races will be a silent auction. Check-in for the races is 5 to 5:30 p.m. and the race begins at 6 p.m. All interested adults are invited to participate.
