Havre girls win back-to-back state championships

GREAT FALLS — With a 42-36 win over Hardin Saturday night at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls, the Havre High girls basketball team captured the Class A state championship for the second-straight season, making them the first-ever Blue Pony basketball team to win back-to-back championships.

Havre defeated Hardin after a hard-fought battle in what was the fourth postseason matchup between the two teams over the past two season. The Blue Ponies also beat the Bulldogs in the 2018 state championship game.

“Our kids are wonderful,” HHS head coach Dustin Kraske said. “I am so happy for them. It couldn’t get any better.”

Kyndall Keller scored a game-high 17 points in the win for Havre and she made two critical 3-pointers in the second half. Sadie Filius also knocked down a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter that helped the Ponies build an eight-point lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

The Havre girls have now won a total of six state championships, with this being the third under Kraske, with each of his coming in the last six years. The Ponies last three state championship victories have all come at the Four Seasons. Havre beat Hamilton for the title in 2014, in addition to knocking off Hardin for the Class A crown each of the past two seasons.

“It’s surreal,” Filius said. “I don’t know what to say. Our team is unbelievable.”
