In 1948 Virginia married Joe Kapernick. They moved to Bozeman while Joe completed his degree in civil engineering. Their daughter Karen was born while in Bozeman. The family then moved to Helena where Joe worked on the construction of the Canyon Ferry Dam. Several years later, Joe accepted an engineering position in Chicago, Illinois, to work on the interstate highway system. During this time their son Doug was born.

Virginia and Joe later divorced, and Virginia and the children moved back to Havre where she taught English at Havre High School. She retired from teaching in 1983. The prior year, Virginia's mother, Clara, passed away. She then became the primary caregiver for her father until he passed away in 1997 at age 100.

Virginia enjoyed knitting and crocheting afghans for family and friends. She frequently traveled to Minnesota to visit her children, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Bear Paw Retired Educators. She was an active member of First Lutheran church, as well as WELCA, Esther Circle, and the Thursday afternoon Bible study group.
