Class B allstars take HIT girls title

The Hi-Line Invitational Tournament is about identifying some of the top high school basketball players in the state of Montana and this past weekend in Havre, it certainly did that.

The three-day tournament, which started last Thursday, was played for the 33rd time and for the 12th time, Montana State University-Northern hosted the HIT inside the Armory Gymnasium.

Over the years, the tournament with All-Star teams from each classification has been dominated, especially in the girls competition, by the Class B team and after winning three of four games, the Class B team again took home the team title after knocking off Class C in the title game Saturday 96-75.

Imani Bighorn of Class B state champion Wolf Point scored 21 points to lead all scorers. Kyle Olson had 12 and L'Tia Lawrence of Harlem, who was named Tournament MVP, finished with 12. The Class C girls got 16 from Sidney Dethman and 12 from Lilly Gopher, who was representing the two-time state champion Box Elder Bears.

Class C eventually made it to the championship game, but it lost the first game of the tournament to Class A Thursday 90-70. Kyndall Keller of Havre, who wound up being the scoring champion, scored 27 points in the win. Class A also got 23 from Mya Hansen. Alyssa Vandenburg led Class C with 18.

The Class A girls also got a win Friday 69-58 over Class AA as Keller scored 14, Hansen had 14 and Olivia Moten-Schell added 11. TyRee Manuel had 12 points for Class AA, which also got 11 from Maddie Albrecht and 10 from Willa Albrecht.

While Class A was 2-0, it ended up being part of a three-team tiebreaker with Class B and Class C and a 93-64 loss Friday to Class B ended up costing Class A the chance to play for the team championship. Lawrence was outstanding in the win, scoring 21 points. Alison Harris also added 11. Keller had 17 for Class A, which also got a strong effort of 11 from Moten-Schell and Kadia Miller of Havre.

The Class C girls rallied from their loss and knocked off Class B 76-75 Friday. Sidney and Mackenzie Dethman each had 19 and 16 points respectively. Danielle Zahn had 17 for Class B. Class C also clinched its spot in the title game with an 84-75 win over Class AA. Syndey Brown and Mackenzie Dethman led the way with 15, while Brynn Jolma added 11 and Gopher had 10. TyRee Manuel paced AA with 15 along with Maddie Albrecht.

Class B needed a win Saturday morning to find its way into the title game and it got it, knocking off Class AA 91-85. Olson finished with 21 and Bighorn had 18 to go along with 14 from Lawrence. Willa Albrecht had 16 and Maddie Albrecht had 12 in the loss.

Class AA would finish the tournament strong, though, knocking off Class A 76-70 for third place. TyRee Manuel had 16 and TyRaa Manuel had 14 to lead the way. Keller scored 16 in a losing effort. Karson Murphy contributed with 14, Hansen had 13 and Filius pitched in with 12.

In addition to winning MVP, Lawrence also won the 3-point shooting competition. Olson was the assist leader, Maddie Albrecht was the steals leader, Bighorn was the rebounding champion, the Miss Hustle award went to Kortney Nelson of Scobey and the Miss Defense award went to Filius of Havre.

The All-Tournament team also featured Willie Albrecht, Maddie Albrecht, Keller, Hansen, Moten-Schell, Lawrence, Olson, Zahn, Sidney Dethman, McKenzie Dethman and Imani Bighorn.
