Celebrating History: Honoring those who gave their lives

By Emily Mayer

Amidst the numerous stories of thrift, uneasiness with the Russians — or, more specifically, the Bolsheviks — and grasshopper problems, plans were being made to erect a monument to honor those who died in The Great War. The March 29, 1919 edition of The Havre Plaindealer carried this news:

BEHIND THE BOYS LEAGUE MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN

K. O. Hofdahl and E. C. Sprague, the officers of the Behind the Boys League at Box Elder, are making a canvass of the entire county, placing with the business men the Behind the Boys League buttons which they will sell for $1.00 each, the proceeds to go towards the erection of a monument at the county seat for the boys who died during the war.

It is expected that a big Decoration Day meeting will be held on May 30 at which the corner stone will be laid and speeches will be made by prominent men in the northern part of the state.

Do not fail to purchase a button for each member of your family when the opportunity presents itself.

There really wasn’t much local news in this edition, but there was a report on school activities.

Parent Teachers Association

A Parent Teachers association meeting was held Tuesday, March 18 at the Devlin school. Mrs. Clack presided at this meeting but resigned her office to Mrs. Frank Carleton. It was attended by about fifty people. The children of the first, third and fourth grades gave a delightful program after which Mrs. J. A. Wright made an interesting talk on “What Parents Expect of Teachers.’ This was followed with a talk by Miss Barnhill on “What Teachers Expect of Parents.’ At the close of the program doughnuts and coffee were served to those attending.
