Cal Wearley meet a success once again

Havre girls, Glasgow boys take season-opening meet at the Havre Middle School Track

While the sun shined for most of the day, the rain clouds came storming in late during the Cal Wearley Invitational Track Meet Wednesday but it was too late to disturb a pretty picturesque day for spring track in Montana.

A full 28 schools from across the Hi-Line converged upon the Havre Middle School track for the annual meet Wednesday and when it was all said and done, the Havre High girls went home with first place in the girls competition, besting Fort Benton 85 points to 81. In the boys meet, Glasgow earned the top spot with 84 points followed by Malta in second with 75 and Fairfield in third with 66.

"We have had a really great year so far for track," North Star head coach Brian Campbell said. "Last year, we didn't have our first meet until April 20th or so and this year, we got one in during March and another during April, and we had good weather. It was a pretty nice day out there today, and it was just great to see everyone out there competing."

North Star hosts the Cal Wearley every year and it has become a staple of the early season track schedule and fans that turned out saw an intense battle in the girls meet between Fort Benton, the runner-up in Class C last season, and Havre, a team trying to emerge in Class A. The team race was close throughout but the Blue Ponies were able to wrap up the team title with a win in the 1,600-meter relay, which clinched the victory, as Kadia Miller, Jessa Chvilicek, Sadie Filius and Loy Waid ran 4:22 to win the race.

The Havre girls also won the 400-meter relay with a team that featured Chvilicek, Katie Wirtzberger, Grace Loftus and Waid, while also getting first-place finishes in the 300 hurdles from Filius, the 400-meter dash from Wirtzberger and the high jump from Chvilicek. Leah Gannon also helped pace the Longhorns by winning the long jump. The senior was also third in the 800. Maci Molinario also pitched in with a runner-up finish in the javelin.

Another local athlete that stood out in the girls meet was Chinook's Megan Molyneaux, who helped the Sugarbeeters finish fourth thanks to a win in the 200-meter dash and a second-place finish in the 100. Kourtney Hanson of Chinook also won the 800, while L'Tia Lawrence of Harlem finished first in the 3,200 with a time of 12:05. In the 100-meter hurdles, Tatum Hull of Chester-Joplin-Inverness grabbed first place, finishing two spots ahead of Filius, who was third. Hull also finished second in the 300 hurdles and won the girls triple jump.

The boys meet was dominated by Class B squads Glasgow, Malta and Fairfield, however, right after that was a trio of local teams as Fort Benton finished fourth, followed by Havre and North Star in fifth and sixth. The Longhorns finished with 45 points; Havre had 43; and North Star had 38.

Fort Benton got a pair of first-place finishes on its way to getting fourth overall. The Longhorns won the 1,600 relay and they also got a top finish from Connor Schnabel in the 110 hurdles. Caden Rettig of North Star didn't win any events Wednesday, but he still placed in five as an individual, getting third in the 200, fourth in the 400, second in both the pole vault and long jump, as well as fifth in the triple jump, making him one of the most productive athletes in the field.

Some other local athletes who found the winner's circle at the Cal Wearley included Mason Rimson of Havre, who came up with a throw of 149-02 in the javelin to win that event, besting Parker Proulx of Big Sandy who 144-02. Proulx also finished third in the discus. Trajan Hannum also won the lone individual winner for Chinook as he took the top spot in the 800, finishing just ahead of Damon Bird of Fort Benton and Jakob Keller of Havre. Brad Cichosz of Harlem also had a solid day in the distance events, getting second in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600.

Other individuals that had notable finishes included Andrew Boucher of Havre, who was second in the 400, Evan Dahinden of CJI, who got second in the 110 hurdles and Ryan Roth of Big Sandy, who finished third in the 3,200. Brock Proulx also notched a runner-up for the Pioneers in the shot put, followed by teammate Kade Sturtz of Big Sandy in third.
