The Havre High girls track team had a chance to win a fourth straight track meet this past Saturday at the Havre Lions track meet, but unfortunately for the Blue Ponies, the Fort Benton Longhorns were able to beat them on a sunny but windy day at the Havre Middle School track.

With their team at less than 100 percent due to injury, the Pony girls still put together a respectable showing in their home meet with 93 points. Loy Waid (1:03) finished first in the 400-meter dash and Jessa Chvilicek (5-02) won the high jump but it wasn't enough to overcome Fort Benton, which won the meet with 129 points thanks in large part to Leah Gannon and Allie Wallace (300 hurdles, 50.74), who each brought home individual titles.

Both teams also did well in the relay races as the Pony girls took first in the 400-meter relay, with Fort Benton getting second, with the opposite coming true in the 1,600 relay as the Longhorns capped their team championship by winning the final event. Chinook was third in the girls competition thanks to Megan Molyneaux who won the 200 (27.15) and Kourtney Hanson, who was first in the 800 and third in the 400. Rochelle Pease of Rocky Boy took home the top prize in the discus (111-02) and another first-place individual was Janae West of North Star who threw the javelin 106-06 to finish first for the Knights.

In addition to winning the high jump, Chvilicek also scored points by getting second in the 200 and third in the 100. Waid was fourth in the 200, while Kadia Miller was second and third in the 800 and 1,600 respectively. Hannah Haslem finished fourth in those same events (800, 1,600). Sadie Filius was sixth in the 100 and third in the 300 hurdles. Filius tied Grace Loftus in the 100 for sixth and Loftus also notched a second place in the long jump. Another junior who found the podium was Devyn Huebsch who was fifth in the triple jump, and also scoring points for HHS was Abbey Morse, who finished sixth in the javelin.

In the boys meet, Fort Benton completed the sweep for the Longhorns, as they scored 115 points to edge Malta for first place. The Mustangs were second with 105.33 followed by Belt with 93 and the Havre boys with 42.

A big key for the Longhorns was their domination of the running events. Fort Benton won both relay events, the 400 and the 1,600 in addition to Billy Ullery, winning first in the 100 and second in the 200. Damon Bird also had a stellar showing, getting first in the 800 and second in the 1,600, while Garrett Diekhans won the 110 hurdles and Connor Schnabel won the pole vault. Some other local individuals who won titles included Cord Schneider of Chinook, who won the shot put (40-06), as well as Brock Proulx of Big Sandy, the winner of the discus with a throw of 121-05.

As far as the Havre boys were concerned, it was the Ponies top overall finish of the season, getting fourth. HHS also put together its highest point total of the season with 42 and nearly a quarter of those points came from Mason Rismon. For the third straight event, Rismon won the javelin and he did so Saturday with a throw of 144-09.

The Ponies also got points in the running events from Andrew Boucher and Brandon Shaw. Boucher finished second in the 400 and third in the 100, in addition to helping Havre get fifth in the short relay. For Shaw, it was his final Havre Lions track meet and in one of his final chances to compete on his home track, he took advantage, finishing sixth in the 100 and helping the short relay team finish fifth.

"It just felt really good for me to be able to place," Shaw said. "I haven't placed before in a varsity meet and to be able to get some points for my team feels good. I have been working really hard these last few years.

"It's just nice to get a chance to compete here on our home track," he added. "I have been really trying to place for a long time and to have it happen for the first time here is awesome. It's been a fun day."

Fellow senior Dylan Chvilicek also had a solid outing in his final Havre Lions track meet, notching fourth in the javelin. Nolan Lotton also contributed with a fifth-place in 200; Noah Azure was fifth in the 1,600; Dylan Young was fourth in the 1,600; Preston Glock was sixth in the 300 hurdles and Brock Nystrom got sixth for Havre in the pole vault.

Both Harlem teams also got outstanding performances from distance runners as L'Tia Lawrence won both the girls 1,600 and 3,200. Brad Cichosz did the same for the Harlem boys, but both teams finished outside the top five overall.

The Havre track teams will be on the road until May 4 and the next meet for the Blue Ponies will come Friday in Belgrade at the Belgrade Invitational.
