Obituary - John G. Meyers, "Heatwave Walker"

John G. Meyers, "Heatwave Walker," 87, passed away due to natural causes at Northern Montana Care Center on Friday, April 19, 2019.

Wake services began at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, 2019, and continued until his funeral service, at 10:00 a.m. today, Monday, April 22, 2019, all at the new Rocky Boy Senior Center. Burial will follow in the Warrior's Burial Ground.

John was born on February 26, 1932, in Rocky Boy to Gilbert and Elizabeth (Earth Walker) Meyers. He was raised in Rocky Boy, attending school there. On August 2, 1950, John entered the U.S. Army, and served until his honorable discharge from the Reserves on January 27, 1956. He married Nancy Meyers, and the couple had 10 children together. They later divorced. John worked for many years as a heavy equipment operator in road construction, but he also worked for the Rocky Boy Police Department and as a firefighter. In his "off" time, John ranched, caring for his horses and cows.

He enjoyed riding and working his horses, hunting, singing, sweats, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a Sundance leader for many years, and took his responsibilities as a religious leader seriously. He was the one parents called upon to give their children their Indian names. John was very proud of his tribal culture, and he tried to instill a love and pride for the culture in many others. He was one of the original Haystack Ramblers, and they paved the way for many other groups. He was also one of the original members of the Painted Drum Society.

He was preceded in death by his children John Edwin and Duane Meyers, Lionell John Stevens, Karen Jo Meyers, and Bonnie Jean Meyers; former wife, Nancy Meyers; partners Amy Harris, and Geneva Stump; brothers, Donald William Meyers and Joe Ironman; and sisters Julia Stump, and Alice and Bernice Russette.

John is survived by his sons Donald Goodvoice of Rocky Boy, and Henry and Tommy FourSouls of Rocky Boy; daughters Diana (Dave) Upchurch of Stockett, MT, Maria Sponsler of Havre, Edna Meyers of Box Elder, Betty (Mark) Collins of Rocky Boy, Carol Meyers of Havre, Desiree (John Gardipee) Writing Bird of Rocky Boy and Nancy Marie Meyers of Phoenix, AZ; 36 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters Linda Luna of Box Elder and Jackie Meyers Swan of Rocky Boy, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
