Northstars sweep Cardinals to open district play

The Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team wasn't even supposed to play at home Sunday. Instead, they were supposed to play the Tri-County Cardinals on the road.

Yet, due to poor weather in Conrad, the Northern A District doubleheader was moved to Legion Field and in the first conference games of the season, the Northstars took care of business, sweeping the Cardinals Sunday by the scores of 8-4 and 4-2.

The Northstars fell behind 2-0 in the first game as Tony Antley surrendered a pair of runs on the mound, but Havre responded by scoring five runs in the bottom half of the first inning to go in front 5-2. After that, Antley limited the Cardinals to three runs over the next four innings. When he left the game, Havre led 8-3 and Hunter Lovenguth was able to pitch through the last two innings to wrap up the win.

In addition to earning the win on the mound, Antley also managed two hits and scored two runs at the plate. Quinn Reno also pitched in with two hits, an RBI and a run. Lovenguth and Caleb Allestad also added a hit, a run, and an RBI each in the win.

Kennedy McKay took the ball in the second game for the Northstars and he made quick work of the Cardinals, getting through seven innings in 88 pitches while allowing just one hit and two runs in a 4-2 victory. McKay walked three batters and struck out five as he got the complete-game victory.

Ethan Roberts and Austin Delarosa sparked things offensively for the Northstars as each managed a team-high two hits in the win. Eli Cloninger also added a hit and an RBI. Havre (4-1) is scheduled to play in Great Falls Wednesday for a game against the AA Great Falls Chargers.
