Local Golf Report: Great start to tournament season

From Tee to Green

Saturday marked the start of summer, at least on the local golf tournament scene, and it couldn't have been a better day for two big tournaments in Havre.

At Prairie Farms Golf Course Saturday, the annual Golfing For a Cure Tournament, put on by the Havre Women's Golf Association, was played under warm, sunny skies. The tournament, which made some format changes this year with each four-person scramble team now consisting of two men and two women, was sold-out, with a 24-team field.

First-place honors went to Helena Agri Enterprises, which consisted of Darrin Boss, Wayne Bolken, Karla Bolken and Peggy Lamb. Second place was a tie, with Triple Dog Brewing Company breaking the tie. The team was composed of Jay Eslick, Hoover Peterson, Barb Eslick and Kathy Peterson. Third place was won by Valley Furniture #1. The team was made up of Mike Evans, Mike Purkett, Kim Evans and Kim Purkett. Darby Donoven was also the winner of the Las Vegas Trip Raffle.

Every year, Golfing For a Cure Tournament means so much to so many in Havre and on the Hi-Line, and as someone who has had breast cancer hit very close to home in my past, I'd just like to say thank-you to all who participated, all who worked so hard to put the event on again this year, and to all who donated, whether it be time, money, or anything else. Thank you to all of you.

On the other side of Havre Saturday, Beaver Creek Golf Course played host to the annual Havre Wrestling Tournament. The annual four-person scramble is one of their biggest fundraisers, and while I didn't receive any official results, I did see plenty of videos and photos, so, I can assure all of you, the tournament was not only a big success, but also a great time was had by all.

Also, a big congrats to Havre's Shane Kemmer and Thomas Kline for winning their flight at this weekend's Steamboat Tournament in Fort Benton.

The local tourney schedule continues this weekend with the NLSAF Scramble at Prairie Farms Golf Course. The tournament is a fundraiser for MSU-Northern athletics.

In league golf last week at Prairie Farms Golf Course, Vic's Place was high team with 23 points Tuesday night. The team was made up of Tom Haas, Hoover Peterson, Kerry Ward and Lowell Swenson. Jeremy Jensen shot a stellar 2-under par 34 for low gross, while Gary Stremcha was low net with a 28.

Last Wednesday night saw Havre Ford take high-team honors with 21.5 points. Dr. Kevin Harada, J.T. Scubert, Dave Boles and Kerry Olson composed the team. Kyle Miller was low gross with a 1-under 35, while Steve Brown and Deven Donovan were low net at 32.

In women's league last Thursday night, Independence Bank was high team with 25 points. The team was made up of Teresa Brown, Delonna Malone, Maxine Munson and Terry Lilletvedt. Sarah Spangler and Ali Ward each shot 39 for low gross,. While Malone and Haley Kline were low net at 32.
