"Be Snake Aware" hike rescheduled

The “Be Snake Aware” Hike at First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to noon.

The event was originally scheduled for June 8.

Fear of snakes doesn’t mean people have to stop hiking. They just have to know what to do if they encounter a snake on the trail. People can join Dan “The Snake Man” Wiatt for a guided hike through the park to learn where snakes like to hide and how to avoid them on the trails. They can bring cameras and get some photos while hiking the park.

People cannot wear open-toed shoes on the hike. Children 8 years and older can attend but must be accompanied by an adult and be under control. The limit is 20 individuals for the hike so people must call the park at 406-866-2217 to reserve a spot. A second hike may be offered if the first hike fills up.

First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park is a National Historic Landmark and one of the largest buffalo jumps in North America. The visitor center and interpretive trails tell the story of the people, the animals and the landscape of the buffalo culture. In 2014, more than 17,000 people visited the park.
