Masons, Shriners present award, Kindles at Sunnyside

Havre Masonic Lodge No. 55 and the North Central Shrine Club presented Sunnyside Intermediate School with an award from the club honoring the school for its donation to the club, as well as presenting Kindles from the Masons to four students.

Shriner Kelly Brandon said Sunnyside donated some money from its annual trade fair, in which fifth-graders set up booths to sell items they have crafted, to the Shriners.

"It was cool," he said. "... It really worked out well."

He added that the students this year raised the most money they ever have in their trade fair. The school also usually picks three organizations to donate to, but this year also donated $600 to the Shriners' travel fund, used to help children travel to Shriners Hospitals.

The students decide who they would like to donate to, he added.

"It was really a good thing and we were really grateful that they were willing to do that," Brandon said.

He said that last year the Shriners transported 20 children to the hospital.

Shriners Hospitals are specialty hospitals for children and are free of charge to the families.

Patients can be referred by doctors or parents can speak to a Shriner about how to get their children into the hospital.

"Some of the best doctors are there," he said.

At the same assembly, the Havre Masonic Lodge No. 55 presented four Sunnyside students with Kindles, in conjunction with the lodge's Bikes for Books and Kindles for Kids Program. Two fourth-grade students and two fifth-grade students received Kindles.

Sunnyside was one out of 10 schools in the Hill County area, including the Gildford Colony School, to receive bikes or Kindles. The lodge gave away 11 bikes and 12 Kindles. The bikes and Kindles were paid for by the Havre lodge.
