Gas leak leads to evacuation in Highland Park

Multiple units from Havre Fire Department and Police Department were on the scene of a gas leak near Highland Park Early Primary School before 10 a.m. Thursday, leading to the evacuation of at least two homes next to the school as NorthWestern Energy employees worked to repair the leak.

NorthWestern Energy spokeswoman Jo Dee Black said Tbursday the leak was caused when some contractors, who were not doing work for NorthWestern, hit a line near the north side of Highland Park Early Primary.

Gas from the leak could be smelled from blocks away

Havre police redirected traffic from 11th Street West while the fire department blocked off Washington Avenue in front of the school.

Havre Public Schools announced that the summer lunch program and all activities at Highland Park Early Primary School were canceled Thursday due to the gas leak.

Black said about 12:40 p.m. Thursday the area where the gas line was broken was isolated and repairs were being made.
