HELP Camp reunion set for Saturday

The HELP Committee and Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line is hosting a HELP Camp Alumni Barbecue and Reunion Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club to celebrate 30 years of camps.

Havre Encourages Long-range Prevention started in 1979, a prevention agency intended do work around the community that had the idea that some sort of leadership camp for youths was needed.

Robin Morris, the first HELP Committee executive director, started the camp and “thought we could do something here to help in our community for the kids,” Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line Director Tim Brurud said.

Morris will also be attending the barbecue this weekend.

Brurud said that, since then, the camp has evolved, but kept the same basic format. The camp has three basic things that happen: small groups that meet periodically, workshops where the participants are divided into four teams and general sessions where everyone comes together to discuss certain topics and fun stuff in between.

“The reunion is going to be a chance for everyone to come together,” Brurud said.

Brurud added that barbecue will be provided at the reunion, along with momentos from previous HELP camps displayed and chance for those who have not seen the Boys & Girls Club since its expansions to get a tour of the building.

“I think it is going to be fun. I know there are going to campers that I haven’t seen in a while. I know some of them will come back, so it will be fun to catch up,” Brurud said.
