Men's health fair set at Northern Winz

Rocky Boy Health Center will host the third annual Men’s Health Fair June 26 at the Northern Winz Casino for men older than 18.

Diabetes Program Director Lisa Scheresky O’Neil said the event has many purposes: to inform, educate, empower, protect and to simply bring people together.

“We feel like the more all people know about health care and prevention, the better they can prevent delay onset of, or screen for early detection of certain preventable health care concerns like influenza, diabetes or certain cancers,” O’Neil said.

She said that when the planning committee first began the Men’s Health Fair they developed the phrase “A Healthy Warrior is an Informed Warrior” to set the tone of the event, wich they plan to hold annually.

“We saw a need in the community for all those things and we found a way to fill that need,” O’Neil said. “It changes every year, just as the needs of our community changes.”

The event is a drug- and alcohol-free event and is free to the first 200 men who register.

An opening ceremony with a meal will start at 5:15 p.m. trailed behind at 6 p.m. with a presentation about commercial tobacco vs. cultural tobacco.

Informational booths will be provided including on dental health, suicide prevention, public health, alternative resources and more.

Free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings will be offered and the importance of colorectal and prostate screening as well.

The door prizes being drawn during the evening contain donated items, such as a camping package, chainsaw and a 65” TV are just a few examples.

June is Men’s Health Month, an awareness period to encourage men and boys to take care of their health and to brighten the public awareness of the many preventable health problems that affect them and their families.
